A good way to come up with genuinely alien concepts and ideas is to have some idea of the backstory to the design. Come up with rough ideas for a race, what they look like, what their culture is, any quirks about them. Religion or lack thereof, hivemind-ness or lack thereof, etc. etc.
That's normally enough to inspire some neet designs. The reason to do it is more to get better inspiration for your art than anything else. It'll also help you to break conventions that need to be broken that you might otherwise follow unconciously. It's something we've been taught here in my 3D course and I've found it works very well. Perhaps give it a go rather than just shooting for some abstract "alien look". I'm not saying your design is lacking however, it's very cool.
